Setting up an email account

How to set up one or more email accounts. This tutorial *should* enable you to set up accounts in Outlook, Thunderbird and many other email clients. The screenshots are from Outlook Express.

I am assuming you have an active email account somewhere possibly with NTL, BT, Tiscalli etc...

Firstly you will need a few bits of information such as:-

  • Your email address
  • Username (if different to email address)
  • pop and smtp addresses (your service provider should give you these)

First Step: Load up your email client. Find the option as shown here, the exact location will differ between clients, all screenshots shown throughout this tutorial are from MS Outlook Express. Select the 'Add' then 'Mail' from the Accounts window. If this is the first time opening Outlook Express you should see the next screen automatically.

Enter your name as you would like others to see it when your sent emails arrive. This can be a nickname or just first name.

No need to explain this? If you don't have an email account why not request one through this site? Go to the forum and post your request. Most NetGap addresses are available and are free. Eg. yourname@netgap.co.uk. Unlike other services it is unlikely your name has been taken so no more pete16662@hotmail.com plus NetGap intend to provide an internet based email system in the future so you can check your emails from anywhere - not just your home PC

Your service provider should have given you these, if not try looking them up on the internet. If you have a NetGap email account then use : pop.1and1.co.uk and auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk

If you have not been given a username you might try the first part of your email address (the part before the @ symbol) or in some cases your full email address. That's it you should now be able to receive emails (note: if you are using a NetGap account you will need to follow the next step and under the 'Servers' tab you need to tick the 'My server requires authentication' option.

Do you have multiple windows user accounts on your PC? (ie. You each log in under a different account after powering up your sysem) - then read on....

If you are sharing a single email address across 2 or more windows user accounts then you might like to follow the next steps. Why? By default Outlook will remove the message from the email server, this means other accounts cannot also receive that message. By leaving the message on the server you will all enjoy receiving the same emails

Select the email account you with to change, then 'Properties' (to get to this screen see the first step)

Tick the box as shown (note: the servers tab next to general required for NetGap accounts)
